The Original Mahavishnu Gig List (1971-1973)

This latest version of the official Mahavishnu Orchestra Gig List is the product of hundreds of hours of laborious research. The ultimate goal is to verify every single show the original Mahavishnu Orchestra ever presented. The gig list shows just how much this band worked! It was too much, really. How could you not be totally exhausted, physically and mentally, playing this demanding music day after day, night after night in city after city? It amazes me the band was able to keep it together for as long as it did. Every meteor eventually crashes.
Elliott Sears, road manager for the original band, unwittingly gave me the idea of creating the list. I discovered, while interviewing Elliott, that he was one of those guys who saved stuff. In fact, it turns out, that even after 30 years, he still possessed a surprising amount of the group’s tour itineraries. They were chock-full of information that offered the possibility of delving even further into the band’s history.
I was also able to build upon the earlier efforts of Johann Haidenbauer, Graham Crawford, David Graham, Greger Wikberg, Mark Chapman, Rod Sibley, Jeff Frank and Julian Derry. I thank them and thanks also goes to Ted McCallion for his assistance.
As time passed, I added poster, newspaper ad and ticket stub images to further verify shows. This corroborating evidence added important context to the Mahavishnu story. Many of the contributors belong to the One-Word on-line mailing list, created by Andres Didrik, which honors John McLaughlin. I thank everyone involved.
Unfortunately, because online concert databases have usurped the material I collected without attribution to me or to any contributors, I have removed the artifacts from this new updated Gig List.
Instead, I have provided a new geographical display to be confirmed by ticket stubs only. I would be most honored by any donations of ticket stub images that help confirm the gig history.
Researching for this gig project for nearly 2 decades gave me the impetus to chronicle the amazing touring history of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra. You can read all about that history in Mahavishnu Memories!
